Mission:

The mission of the Social Work G.R.O. Initiative (Growth, Renewal, Outreach), in concert with the mission of the Shepherd University Social Work Program, is to expand opportunities for professional development, self-care, and networking to social workers and other helping professionals in our community while providing opportunities for social work student / social work practitioner interaction in shared learning environments.

Goals:

G. – Growth: Assist social workers in their professional growth by providing continuing education opportunities focused on contemporary social work issues in our community.

R. – Renewal: Provide opportunities for social workers and other helping professionals to connect (and reconnect) with each other through events and activities designed to promote self-care and to strengthen professional relationships.

O. – Outreach: Expand social work program outreach to under-served communities in our region to inform our curricular and continuing education offerings and to develop partnerships that will enhance student learning experiences.

Training: “Planning for the Future: Navigating Advance Care Planning” (Closed)

Summary: The objectives of this training are to enhance social workers’ understanding of advance care planning, including learning and discussing what advance care planning is and why it is needed. Participants will also learn to understand different types of advance directives and practical steps to making wishes known and honored. Finally, participants will learn more about Hospice of the Panhandle and ways they can help and support families.
