Who We Are
Shepherd University’s mission as a public liberal arts university embraces a diverse community of learners, with Shepherd as a gateway to the world of opportunities and ideas. Our core values of learning, engagement, integrity, accessibility and community shape our students’ educational experience and prepare our students to be contributing citizens globally, in their communities and professions.
Shepherd is a member of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges (COPLAC). COPLAC’s mission is to identify and support high quality public liberal arts and sciences institutions. This is an honor reserved for one institution per state and represents our University’s focus on traditional liberal arts disciplines; opportunities for student and faculty interaction; a critical mass of students in a residential environment; student participation in co-curricular activities, as well as a clear commitment to cultural diversity.
At Shepherd, we seek to distinguish ourselves through innovative education and memorable student experiences. We are committed to enhancing the academic brand of the university through supporting, recognizing, and celebrating the scholarship and creative endeavors of students, faculty and staff both inside and outside the classroom. We have a strong commitment to civic engagement and experiential learning through internships and co-ops. These important opportunities provide practical experience as students transition from courses into careers.
