Nestled in the Shenandoah Valley on the banks of the Potomac River, Shepherdstown has a quiet beauty that belies its proximity to major metro areas and transportation hubs. We are easy to get to, located just 70 miles from the airports of Baltimore and Washington, DC, less than 5 hours from Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and NYC, and only 10 miles from Interstate 81.
Shepherd University offers state-of-the-art classrooms, lecture halls, auditoriums, and multi-purpose rooms in a variety of price ranges, sized for groups from 5 to 450. One of our facilities is sure to suit your group’s needs.
The Shepherd University Student Center offers 6 meeting rooms, a large ballroom, a large open dining venue, and an outdoor patio with gas grill. This facility is suited for groups both large and small, with breakout and banquet rooms ranging in capacity from 15 to 350 people. These spaces rent for between $25 and $110 per hour. Large groups wishing to rent the majority of the building can take advantage of our economical group rate. If this is of interest to you, please indicate so on the conference request form.
Erma Ora Byrd Hall is home to a state-of-the-art 120 person auditorium/lecture hall, a light-filled atrium, and classrooms ideal for breakout sessions or seminars. These spaces rent for between $55 and $75 per hour.
The Byrd Center for History and Education is located across from the Shepherd University Student Center and adjoins the Scarborough Library with its copiers, printers, and a limited number of computers available for public use. The Byrd Center offers a 96 person auditorium/lecture room across the hall from two small classrooms that seat 25 – 30. Light snacks can be served in the rotunda and a buffet table can be set up outside a lower level room that seats up to 40 people in chairs.
The historic Reynold’s Hall is a 197 person auditorium with a stage and limited backstage area. This space boasts a projection room and an easy-to-use but powerful AV setup.
Popodicon, a Southern-style mansion built in 1907, is a highlight of the Shepherdstown community with its stately lawn and formal garden located on Shepherd Grade Road. The venue is the perfect setting for weddings and other formal events, birthday and anniversary parties, intimate dinners and business meetings. Individuals, groups or organizations desiring to rent Popodicon, home and/or grounds, must first complete the Facility Use Request Form and submit it to Conference Services, popodicon@shepherd.edu.
Overnight accommodations are available during the summer in our residence halls. You are sure to sleep well whether you choose the economy of our traditional-style buildings (Shaw and Thacher Halls), the privacy of our suites that are like apartments without kitchens (Westwoods or Miller), the 2017 constructed hall that features Tempurpedic mattresses and microwaves/fridges (Potomac Place), or the convenience of our apartments complete with full kitchens (Dunlop and Printz).
Our dining partner, Aramark, creates meals to be enjoyed in the all-you-care-to-eat Dining Hall or brought to your location by their Catering department. We specialize in unique meals, from an elegant banquet to a casual barbecue.
Relaxation and recreation opportunities abound, both on campus and off. Our Games Zone boasts an eight-lane bowling alley, billiards, foosball, and air hockey. Fitness and fun unite at the Wellness Center, which is available for individual workouts or large group events. The C&O Canal National Park, perfect for hiking, biking, or running, is a short walk from campus. Historic Harper’s Ferry and Antietam Battlefield National Parks are just minutes away by car.
