| Rev. Dr. John R. Unger II is a priest and educator whose vocation bridges faith, ethics, education, and public leadership. He serves as senior pastor for three historic congregations in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia—Lutheran, Episcopal, and United Methodist—where he leads a united ministry of spiritual renewal, civic engagement, and community transformation. A Rhodes Scholar and longtime educator, Dr. Unger teaches at both Shepherd University and Blue Ridge Community and Technical College and, where he has developed and taught innovative courses such as AI and Society, Leading in the AI Age, International Business, Recovery/Life Coaching Academy, and Psychology of Addiction. His academic and civic work often explores the intersection of ethics, artificial intelligence, and the human flourishing helping students and leaders discern how to live thoughtfully and responsibly in the age of technology. Dr. Unger previously served five terms in the West Virginia Senate, where he sponsored and passed landmark legislation on education, healthcare, and community development, including the bill that elevated Shepherd College to university status. He is also the founder and board chair of Greater Recovery and Community Empowerment (GRaCE), a nonprofit dedicated to recovery, workforce development, and social capital renewal across West Virginia. Nationally and globally, Dr. Unger worked with Mother Teresa and Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta, India. He engaged in international diplomacy and collaborates with the World Bank’s Citizen Engagement and Sustainable Development teams, helping design frameworks for AI ethics, safety, leadership, and public trust. A Trinity Leadership Fellow at Trinity Church Wall Street and a C.S. Lewis Institute Fellow, he continues to develop theological and ethical models that integrate spiritual wisdom with civic and technological innovation. At the George Washington Institute of Living Ethics, Dr. Unger will contribute his interdisciplinary expertise to advancing moral reflection and public virtue in contemporary life helping renew the vision of George Washington’s “living ethics” for a society shaped by faith, reason, and emerging technologies. |
