Q: What will we do at the institute?
A: We will READ, WRITE, and SHARE, as is common in writing workshops. We will READ contemporary, professional writing about engaged writing pedagogy. We will WRITE about our classroom practice and ideas for innovation, connecting these to our readings. And, we will SHARE our ideas with each other. We will also SHARE our best teaching practices with each other so we can leave with new methods to try.
Q: Is this really for ALL teachers K-16?
A: YES! We are intentional about our inclusion of all teachers, not just English Language Arts or a specific grade level. We believe that we can learn a lot from teacher practice and from sharing stories and ideas between teachers. Our discussions will allow for connections to personal experience and for a variety of applications.
Q: What will I get out of this institute?
A: You will leave with new teaching methods backed up by current best practices. You will also be well-read on these best practices after the institute. And you will make new connections to other teachers. You will also be invited to participate in future SU NWP events and to join our teacher leadership circle.
Q: What is the meeting schedule breakdown again?
A: We will meet half-days from 9am-1pm on June 6,8,17 (in person) & 10, 13, 15 (on Zoom). The institute will kick off in person at Shepherd University on Monday, June 6th, allowing us to get to know each other. We will check back in-person on June 8 and then end the workshop with an in-person celebration on June 17th.
Q: What will a typical institute day look like?
A: We will gather virtually or in-person and spend time in small groups doing an informal writing activity related to a reading and then share together. Some days, we will have a brief talk by one of our master teachers. We will also provide time for teachers to share their craft by doing mini teaching demonstrations so everyone can learn from each other. Finally, we will guide our teachers to write for public/cation: for any public venue with which they might want to share their knowledge (at their schools for in-service; conference presentations; within their classrooms; professional journals or publications).
Q: I registered; what’s next?
A: You will receive an email confirmation with information about next steps. We will also have a virtual pre-institute meeting in mid May.
Q: I have more questions!
A: Email the Co-Directors of the Shepherd University National Writing Project: bsantana@shepherd.edu and ljohnson@shepherd.edu
