Brand funds internship opportunities in rural health policy
Shepherd University is pleased to offer internship opportunities in rural health policy for students pursuing studies in healthcare and healthcare management. Dr. Marcia K. Brand, who currently serves as chair of Shepherd’s Board of Governors, sponsors the internships. The internships may take place at either of two organizations: FORHP, which allows students to learn about federal and state programs that exist to support rural communities, or the National Rural Health Association (NRHA), the principal membership organization in the nation for rural health policy. Both organizations regularly host interns and are excited about the opportunity to work with Shepherd. >MORE
Potomac Applied Business Company gets first contract
The Potomac Applied Business Company (PABC) at Shepherd University has landed its first contract providing digital media strategic service to commercial clients. In addition, PABC has hired its first three student interns and its first part-time employee. PABC is a business management consulting organization focused on delivering excellence in client delivery services, bringing business to the Shepherdstown area, and providing real-world work experience to undergraduate and graduate students. PABC is creating challenging employment opportunities for Shepherd University students and pairing them with seasoned subject matter experts in the business consulting industry to teach real-world corporate skills necessary to compete in today’s fast-paced environment. >MORE
Four recent grads hired by PotomacWave Consulting
Four 2017 Shepherd University graduates have been hired by PotomacWave Consulting, an Alexandria, Virginia, firm, specializing in mission-critical program management support in intelligence analysis and operations, information technology and cybersecurity, and financial management. Pictured above (l. to r.) are Andrew Potts, Falling Waters; Ines Mrkanovic, Emmitsburg, Maryland; Kathlene Striano, Columbia, Maryland; and Chace Jones, Martinsburg. Jones works with PotomacWave’s Proposal Team to develop responses to Government Requests for Proposals and Requests for Information. He will also be responsible for our internal company newsletter and assisting in the development of marketing material. Potts, Mrkanovic, and Striano are joining the Government Consulting practice and will be supporting federal customers on accounting and financial-related engagements. All four have been paired up with a PotomacWave executive so they can start to learn how the business operates. They’ll be exposed to corporate operations, customer management, service delivery, and business development. Potts, Mrkanovic, Striano, and Jones were hired after PotomacWave participated in Shepherd’s Targeted Recruitment Initiative. The company conducted four information sessions on campus in January 2017 for juniors and seniors seeking jobs and/or summer internships.
Student earns fellowship at National Institute of Standards and Technology
Christian Burns, a computer engineering and computer science major, is spending his summer working at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Burns, of Hagerstown, Maryland, was chosen for an 11-week Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) during which he will work in cybersecurity with industrial robots. >MORE
Students use NASA West Virginia Space Grant Consortium fellowship, SOARS grant to conduct tree research
Sierra Hoffman, a senior biology major from Hagerstown, Maryland, received an undergraduate research fellowship from the NASA West Virginia Space Grant Consortium, which allowed her to work with Dr. Mark Lesser, assistant professor of biology, over the summer and to attend the upcoming US-IALE meeting. Amaris Jalil, a sophomore biology major from Charles Town, received a Shepherd Opportunities to Attract Research Students (SOARS) grant to help with the research. >MORE
Invenergy Beech Ridge Energy Storage Project
Michael Polsky, founder of the Chicago-based clean energy company Invenergy, announced at President Mary J.C. Hendrix’s inauguration energy symposium on April 8, 2016 the creation of a new opportunity for Shepherd students. Invenergy’s Beech Ridge Energy Storage Project will offer an internship for one Shepherd University student each summer to work at the facility and learn about the real-world applications of renewable energy. Located in Greenbrier County, West Virginia, the Beech Ridge facility has been operational since November 2015.
