Social Security Number
Apply for a Social Security Card
You must have a Social Security Number (SSN) to work in the US. In order to get a social security number, international students need to apply for a job and receive an offer of employment. Click here to be redirected to the Student Employment Website. Note that international students can only apply for Regular Student Employment or REG/FWS. You will need to create an account and fill in the information and attach a resume or cover letter if necessary.
Once you receive an offer of employment, you will need to gather the following documents and head to the Social Security Administration Office:
- I-20 or DS-2019,
- I-94,
- Employment Verification Letter,
- DSO Letter,
- Graduate assistantship letter (if applicable),
- Passport
- Visa
More information can be found here – Social Security Numbers for Noncitizens. The Social Security Administration Office will process your application and provide you with a receipt. If approved, your card will be sent by mail.
Note: Your SSN is a unique number assigned to you for life. You will need to memorize the number and keep the physical card in a safe place and only carry it when needed. Never give your number to anybody. If you receive phone calls saying that you are in trouble with the IRS or the police and you are asked to provide your SSN, HANG UP immediately.
If your card is stolen, damaged, or lost, you will need to request a new card here.
