An Overview of the Psychology of Modelers

Abstract:
Despite the fact that the building of scale modeling is an ancient activity, few studies have explored the psychology of modelers. This Faculty Research Forum talk is an overview of the research that my students and I have conducted on the topic and includes preliminary results from a new study.
Bio
Larry Daily is a Professor of Psychology at Shepherd University. He is a cognitive psychologist who in the past studied the functioning of human memory. He received his Ph.D. from George Mason University where he investigated the mathematical shape of the forgetting curve in short-term memory. After obtaining his degree, he spent three years as a post-doctoral researcher at Carnegie Mellon University where he developed computer simulations of human working memory. In 2011, Dr. Daily’s research interests shifted dramatically and he has spent the last 11 years investigating the psychology of hobbies, with a special interest in why people choose to spend their free time constructing scale models.
