Mission and Goals
EDPD courses at Shepherd University have been designed to complement the undergraduate and graduate programs by providing quality study and research. EDPD courses have been carefully reviewed and created to enhance the knowledge, skills, and abilities for local, national, and global educators as well as those who are seeking career enhancement . To ensure the highest in educational standard, all professors are qualified to teach on a full- or part-time basis.
Goals of Professional Graduate Education (EDPD)
- To allow educators to earn their required 6 graduate credit hours for re-certification locally.
- To assist teachers in gaining new and vital updated knowledge in various subjects, which they can utilize in their classrooms.
- To assist teachers in their compliance with West Virginia State Law that requires all educators to take graduate-level classes.
- To inform teachers of the latest research in their teaching field(s).
- To assist educators who may be having difficulties with newly assigned duties.
- To have a forum in which teachers may learn from each other through informed dialogue and discussion.
Audience
Shepherd University established EDPD (Professional Development in Education) in 2006, in order to re-certify some 500 educators and others. The primary service areas are West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania, but with most courses taught online, our areas have now extended to the west coast and assist over 1,000 plus teachers in obtaining continuing education credit.

Courses
A wide array of EDPD classes are offered each semester. The largest enrollment is during the summer months when most teachers are on summer break.
Courses are offered in Math, Psychology, History, Ethics, Science, Social Studies, ESL (English as a Second Language), English, Special Education, Classroom Management, AI, Tech in the Classroom, Building Social and Emotional Intelligence, School Administration and Management, Communication, and more.

VESi and Calmer Schools
Virtual Education Software (VESI) online professional development courses are now tablet compatible, making it easy for you to recertify anytime, anywhere with reliable, stable online access. These courses are available for registration during the spring, summer, and fall semesters. You must complete and turn in all assignments during the semester in which you register two weeks prior to the date the grades are due. Calmer Schools (CS) online professional development courses are offered through a third-party educational portal. Online courses are self-paced and can be completed within set start and end times agreed upon by Calmer Schools and the Partner University, Shepherd. Each course includes articles on the topic, assessment tools and more – all at a self-directed pace – allowing educators to complete at least 45 hours of course content eligible for 3-credits. Grading Policy
Please note that the passing grade for all Shepherd EDPD courses is listed as an S for satisfactory. This is equivalent to a B or better. In the case where a student takes an incomplete at the end of a semester and then completes their coursework by the end of the following semester, their satisfactory grade will show up as an I/S, which is equal to an S. This can be found in the University Catalog under the grading policy for Graduate and Professional Studies.
Some institutions require this Grading Policy Letter for tuition reimbursement.

Limitation
EDPD courses may NOT be used as part of a graduate degree program at Shepherd University or other schools in West Virginia. Students are limited to 18 credit hours per semester.
