The Shepherd University Career Services Office partners with faculty and staff to empower students with the knowledge, experiences, and career readiness skills needed to achieve their academic, personal, and professional goals. Through collaboration, communication, and a shared commitment to student success, we support students in exploring opportunities that align with their interests, values, and aspirations.
Our services support undergraduate and graduate students throughout every stage of their career development journey, from major and career exploration to internships, job searches, graduate school preparation, and lifelong career management. Through individual career counseling, classroom presentations, career resources, employer engagement opportunities, and curriculum integration, we help students identify career paths, develop professional application materials, expand their networks, strengthen interviewing skills, and confidently pursue meaningful careers and continued education opportunities.

Career Services welcomes all opportunities to present to students. If you are wanting me to join your class for a full class presentation or event a 15-minute pop-in, We would be more than willing! Please fill out this Microsoft form to add your class to career service’s rotation.
Sending Your Whole Class To The Career Services?
If you plan to have your students visit Career Services for resume reviews or mock interviews, I kindly ask that you send me an Excel list of those students (There is a place to upload this on the Microsoft form). This allows me to track attendance and confirm when students have completed the requirement for your class. This also allows me to ensure that there is ample time to meet with these students/ review resumes.

NACE Competencies To Consider Adding To Your Curriculum:
What is NACE?
The National Association of Colleges and Employers. There are eight (8) Core Competencies you could consider adding to your curriculum. You may already be doing them and do not realize it! All these are about career readiness.
Within higher education, career readiness provides a comprehensive framework for developing and assessing career-related competencies through both academic and co-curricular experiences. Regardless of a student’s field of study, it helps ensure they are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and experiences needed to achieve their career goals and thrive in the workplace. For recent college students, career readiness is essential for a successful transition into the workforce. It serves as the foundation for long-term professional growth and success, making it one of the most valuable assets students can possess in today’s competitive job market.
What are the eight (8) career readiness Competencies to consider adding?
Career & Self-Development
Definition: Proactively develop oneself and one’s career through continual personal and professional learning, awareness of one’s strengths and weaknesses, navigation of career opportunities, and networking to build relationships within and without one’s organization.
Possible Syllabus Language: This course supports your ongoing career and personal development by encouraging self-reflection, goal setting, and lifelong learning. You will identify your strengths, areas for growth, and professional interests while engaging in activities that help you build skills relevant to your future career. You are expected to take initiative in seeking feedback and applying it to improve your performance.
Communication
Definition: Clearly and effectively exchange information, ideas, facts, and perspectives with persons inside and outside of an organization.
Syllabus Language: Effective communication is a core component of this course. You will practice clearly expressing ideas through written, verbal, and/or visual formats. Assignments are designed to strengthen your ability to tailor messages to different audiences, actively listen, and engage respectfully in discussions.
Critical Thinking
Definition: Identify and respond to needs based upon an understanding of situational context and logical analysis of relevant information.
Syllabus Language: This course emphasizes analytical and problem-solving skills. You will evaluate information, identify patterns, and develop evidence-based conclusions. Assignments will require you to think critically, consider multiple perspectives, and apply logical reasoning to complex problems.
Equity & Inclusion
Definition: Demonstrate the awareness, attitude, knowledge, and skills required to equitably engage and include people from different cultures and backgrounds.. Engage in anti-oppressive practices that actively challenge the systems, structures, and policies of racism and inequity.
Syllabus Language: This course fosters a learning environment that respects and values different perspectives and lived experiences. You will engage thoughtfully with others, consider how social and cultural factors shape issues in this field, and reflect on your own assumptions. The course encourages awareness of bias, respectful dialogue, and actions that support fair and meaningful participation for all.
Leadership
Definition: Recognize and capitalize on personal and team strengths to achieve organizational goals.
Syllabus Language: Students will develop leadership skills by taking initiative, contributing to group work, and demonstrating accountability. Leadership in this course includes setting goals, motivating others, and making ethical decisions, regardless of formal leadership roles.
Professionalism
Definition: Knowing work environments differ greatly, understand and demonstrate effective work habits, and act in the interest of the larger community and workplace.
Syllabus Language: Professional behavior is expected throughout this course. This includes meeting deadlines, demonstrating integrity, communicating respectfully, and taking responsibility for your work. You will build habits that reflect workplace expectations and ethical standards.
Teamwork
Definition: Build and maintain collaborative relationships to work effectively toward common goals, while appreciating diverse viewpoints and shared responsibilities.
Syllabus Language: Collaboration is an essential part of this course. You will work with others to achieve shared goals, actively contribute to group tasks, and respect differing viewpoints. You are expected to demonstrate accountability, flexibility, and constructive communication within team settings.
Technology
Definition: Understand and leverage technologies ethically to enhance efficiencies, complete tasks, and accomplish goals.
Syllabus Language: This course incorporates technology to enhance learning and skill development. You will use relevant tools, platforms, and digital resources to complete assignments and solve problems. Emphasis is placed on adaptability, appropriate technology use, and digital literacy.

Comprehensive Language: This course integrates the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) Career Readiness Competencies, including communication, critical thinking, teamwork, professionalism, leadership, equity and inclusion, technology, and career development.
