The Accuplacer Exam (English/Math)

What is the Accuplacer, and who needs Accuplacer scores?

The Accuplacer exam assesses skill levels in reading, writing and math to determine a student’s appropriate course placement.  All new incoming students must have a placement score in math and/or English before registering for their first semester of classes Students without ACT/SAT scores or those who have not completed college‑level English or math must take the Accuplacer exam for placement.

Testing on orientation day will result in a partially completed class schedule (i.e., will not include an English 101/101s until you have a placement score.)

Where do I take the Accuplacer?
The Accuplacer exam can be taken virtually via Zoom or in-person at designated testing days listed above. The “Virtual 1-1 Accuplacer” link will take you to a calendar for online registration only. When you register for an online appointment you will receive an email appointment reminder with a Zoom link. In-person testing appointments will be confirmed either by phone or email with further instructions.

Is there a cost for the Accuplacer?
Yes. The cost of the exam is $20, for either the English or math or for taking both subjects within the same appointment. The fee will be billed to your student account through the Business Office (304-876-5284). 

Can I practice for the Accuplacer?
Yes. Students are encouraged to practice before testing, as the exam is not repeatable unless there are technical difficulties or emergencies during testing. Practice Questions for English Placement    Practice Questions for Math Placement

What is Considered a Passing Score?

When will I know my scores?
As soon as you complete your placement test(s) your Individual Score Report will be displayed on the screen. The report will show your score(s) and course suggestions. A representative from the Academic Support Center will meet with you at the conclusion of testing and review your report with you.

How long is the ACCUPLACER exam?
There is no time limit for completing the Accuplacer, though most students finish in approximately 1 hour for each individual exam.
