VoIP FAQ

Please explore the FAQ’s section below.

Will I get a new phone number if I have one already?

No, you get to keep your existing number.

I do not have an existing phone number, but I need one and a VoIP phone. Can I get one assigned?

Yes, but it may not be a phone number in the normal Shepherd range we have used in the past of (304) 876-5XXX.

Do I need a physical phone?

No, Webex has a softphone application for your computer, cell phone, or tablet that does not require a physical phone.

Can I change my mind about getting a handset?

Yes, if you decide you want a physical handset we can provide one. Also, if we provided you one and after a period of time you decide a soft phone works better, we can take the hard phone back.

Will there be training?

Yes, IT Services will be providing training as time permits. On-demand resources may be found on this Webex YouTube channel.

Do I need a headset?

We recommend users have a headset with microphone for privacy if opting to use the softphone application.

When will VoIP be available for my building?

Due to some problems early in the process of starting to implement VoIP, we cannot provide a defined time table. IT Services will contact you and colleagues about three or so weeks ahead of the conversion to VoIP so you are aware. Please look for our communications.

Where can I send my questions?

We recommend users email itworkorder@shepherd.edu with any questions.
