Team River Runner (TRR) is a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, with over 60 chapters nationwide. Team River Runner-Shepherd (TRR-Shepherd) is the first chapter founded in West Virginia, established in April 2013 by a team of instructors, outfitters, volunteers, and supporters from Shepherd University, Shepherdstown and the surrounding region, and the VA Medical Center in Martinsburg, West Virginia. A second West Virginia chapter in Beckley, was launched Summer 2018.
TRR believes that every healing service member deserves the opportunity to embrace new challenges, learn and practice leadership, and enjoy camaraderie. TRR invites healing veterans and their families to do so through therapeutic, recreational and adaptive paddling programs.
TRR-Shepherd invites and welcomes all military who are healing and serve in any status–retired, reserve, active, or separated–and their family members. This invitation is particularly extended to veterans attending Shepherd University.
TRR-Shepherd offers weekly kayak training programs in the university pool and on local waters, and connects our participants to a supportive and welcoming community. We offer participants the opportunity to attend national leadership, training and certification clinics; to engage with fellow veterans across the country; and to serve and lead at the chapter and regional levels, and beyond.
Our dedicated crew of volunteers fulfills a variety of needs, both in the water and on dry land. Volunteers are Shepherd students, faculty and staff; Shepherdstown and other local residents from the Eastern Panhandle, Maryland, and Virginia; veterans and family members; graduates of the program; and non-veteran/non-paddlers who simply wish to support us.
