Academic Advising

Students will receive individualized advising every semester to build their class schedule and ensure they are taking the right classes for graduation.

Academic Tutoring

TRIO/SSS works closely with the Academic Support Center to provide you with a tutor for your various classes. If the Academic Support Center does not have a tutor on hand for your particular class, we will hire one for you.

Individual Success Plan Completion

Students are encouraged to meet with their TRIO/SSS Academic Retention Specialists to complete the Individual Success Plan (ISP). Students will set short-term and long-term goals for the semester and their academic career. Students will work toward completion of these goals in the time frame set.

Priority Registration

TRIO/SSS students are able to register for classes first to ensure they receive the classes they need to stay on track for graduation.

Career Counseling and Planning

An undergraduate education is important not only to the development of a student’s knowledge, but also to the nurturing of the student’s future vocation. TRIO/SSS provides career counseling and planning to help students identify what their future careers and experiences to prepare them for this career.

Peer Mentor Program

The TRIO/SSS program matches all new incoming first-year participants with an upper-class TRIO/SSS student as their Peer Mentor for their first semester. The Peer Mentor serves as an additional resource for new participants assisting their transition to college and the TRIO/SSS program. The Peer Mentor acts as a good role model of how to be successful at Shepherd in all areas of campus life and discusses any questions or concerns students may have. Whenever possible, matches are made based on shared majors to provide additional academic assistance.

Assistance with Graduate School Applications

TRIO/SSS staff will help students with the application process for graduate school including application completion, assistance with required exams and understanding financial aid/funding opportunities.

TRIO Living/Learning Community  (currently unavailable due to COVID-19)

The TRIO Living/Learning Community gives students the opportunity to live alongside other peers in the TRIO/SSS program. This community is housed within Shaw Hall and the TRIO/SSS program offers workshops and activities right in the building that is open to all participants. Students can walk right down the hall or downstairs to attend a valuable workshop!
