Civil Rights Movement: History and Future in the United States Panel Discussion

Monday, February 26 | 4 P.M. | Student Center Storer Ballroom

“The civil rights movement mobilized the nation’s collective consciousness around issues of racial and gender equity, making lasting impacts on the nation; however, the victories of the movement did not bring the long-term equality that activists and policymakers had envisioned, and today the struggle continues with added complications of digital literacy, and the continued battles happening in the courts and state law challenges to historic protections. Panelists will discuss the history of the movement and how we move forward to ensure the preservation of democracy and continue community and youth engagement. Student leaders and community partners will share information on sustainability and action resources for environmental and gender justice. Campus leaders will then participate in a mindfulness activity, including a movement for a transformative experience of hope, healing, and resilience. For more information, contact alewin@shepherd.edu
