Ally Empowerment Month

Leadership Training 9/13  3:00PM-5:00PM  The Peer Leaders in Action Training is an introductory session for students to build a foundation of knowledge to empower and educate peer student populations and facilitate dialogue to promote healthy relationships, social/emotional wellness, and sustainable social change, both on our campus and throughout the community.  Link
Bringing in the Bystander 9/7  3:15PM-4:30PM  Bringing in the Bystander is an evidence-based bystander intervention program. Rather than focusing strictly on the roles of perpetrator and victim, the highly interactive Bringing in the Bystander curriculum uses a community responsibility approach. It teaches bystanders how to safely intervene in instances where sexual violence, relationship violence, or stalking may be occurring or where there may be a risk that it will occur.  Link 
Movie: The Bystander Movement 9/9    5:30PM  Participants will view the film The Bystander Moment which stresses the crucial importance of appealing to people not as potential perpetrators or passive spectators, but as active bystanders and potential leaders who have a positive role to play in challenging and changing the sexist cultural norms that too often lead to gender violence. Following the film, there will be a discussion facilitated by EPEC and Shepherd students.  Link
Clothesline Project 9/6-9/10     Over a decade-long Shepherd tradition in which students create powerful and creative messages of support to survivors of interpersonal violence. Words and art painted on a decade worth of t-shirts provide encouragement and spread the word of the power of “Standing Up” to interpersonal violence. Come view the messages and visit a table to engage with campus and community resources for survivors.  Link
Yoga: Gender-Based Violence Prevention 9/10 3:30PM-5:00PM Lona Lozinski is a 22 year veteran of the US Air Force and a current member of the Air National Guard and she is also a military spouse. Lona’s time as a First Sergeant as well as her deployments and multiple assignments have given her the opportunity to aid and support service members in fostering resiliency and self-care, which she has incorporated into her passion for yoga. Lona is the owner and sole proprietor of Mohalu Wellness and is a certified 200RYT with Yoga Alliance.  Link
Centering Black Voices Panel  9/16    5:00PM-8:00PM  Over the last few years, the US has been confronting a racial justice reckoning and an important part of this movement is bringing Black voices from the margins to the center. The panel discussion will feature local Black community leaders and students to share their experiences and explore historical and current race relations and issues that exist in our community.  Link
Ally Training  9/24   2:30PM-4:30PM  Part conversation, part training, this allyship conversation teaches about the fundamentals of empathy, reflects on how participants have been allies in the past, and empowers them to continue the work in the future. Learn new tips and techniques on how to become an effective and empathetic ally for marginalized populations in your community and beyond. Rams Rally for Respect 9/30     4:30PM- 7:00PM Rams Rally for Respect aims to engage our campus community in anti-violence action and dialogue to promote a culture of respect on Shepherd’s campus and the surrounding community. Students, faculty, and staff are invited to participate in the annual Rams Rally for Respect to promote a culture of respect and anti-discrimination on campus. The march will start at the Ampitheater and end on the lawn of Potomac Place.    Link

Mental Health, Trauma Awareness, & Building Resilience

Yoga: Indigenous People’s Day 10/11 12PM-2PM Celebrating Indigenous people’s culture and history through mindfulness.   Link
Safe Zone Training 10/20 2PM-3PM  Students will hear from peers, staff, and faculty about being LGBTQ+ and their coming out experience. Panelists will talk about their identities, issues in the LGBTQ+ community and at large, and how to be an ally to LGBTQ+ individuals. Link
Mental Health Speaker 10/28   5:00PM- 8:30PM According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, over 60% of adults had at least one adverse childhood experience or trauma while growing up. Becoming trauma-informed and understanding how trauma affects people throughout their life is becoming more and more important when building relationships. Over the past 18-months, the world has experienced a collective trauma in the form of COVID-19, and we need to learn how to use empathy to help heal ourselves and each other. Dr. Allison Jackson will talk about “trauma 101”, how COVID-19 plays into our relationships, and how we can use empathy to come together and support each other.  Link

Healthy Masculinity

Diwali  11/4 10AM-2PM  Shepherd students will share some of the traditional practices associated with the festival, including Hindu prayer in song, a presentation on Nepal and its Diwali celebrations, and exchange of sweets for those attending in person. Diwali is a religious festival of lights celebrated over five days by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, and some Buddhists, especially Newar Buddhists. The festival is a good opportunity for attendees to learn about Hindu cultural practices. Link
Exploring Masculinity 11/10 4:30PM-6:00PM This campus conversation will provide students, faculty, and staff with the space and opportunity for critical, constructive, and contemplative dialogue around our individual and shared understanding of masculinity.  Link

Trans Day of Remembrance Vigil 11/30 3PM-4PM  Join us in remembering the trans lives that have been lost to transphobic violence and discrimination. Link
