The international honor society of Phi Kappa Phi traces its origins to 1897 when an undergraduate student at the University of Maine spearheaded a proposal to establish an honor society for superior students in all academic disciplines. Today Phi Kappa Phi continues this tradition of recognizing and encouraging superior scholarship in all fields.
Phi Kappa Phi publishes a journal, the Phi Kappa Phi Forum, and a quarterly newsletter, the Phi Kappa Phi Focus. It sponsors a Fellowship Program, which provides more than $400,000 of support to first-year graduate students, as well as other award programs.
Shepherd University’s chapter of Phi Kappa Phi was established in 1998. We initiate new members in the spring of each year. Ten percent of each graduating class is invited for membership. Most students invited are seniors, but some may be invited when they are second-semester juniors. In addition, a small number of outstanding alumni, faculty, and staff are issued invitations.
