Wind Ensemble to perform April 12 concert

SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — The Shepherd University Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Scott Hippensteel, will present “American Spirit,” an evening of wind band music reflecting various facets of American life on Friday, April 12, at 7:30 p.m. in the Frank Arts Center Theater. A pre-concert lecture will begin at 7 p.m.

The program will feature the Mid-Atlantic premiere of a six-movement suite inspired by the heroism of American women, “Women of World War II,” composed by Dr. Stefan Swanson, Shepherd director of music theory, composition, and technology. The audience is invited to meet the composer during a reception immediately following the concert.

Other works performed will be James Beckel’s “The American Dream”; “Nuevo Vientos y Tangos” by Michael Gandolfi; a medley of popular songs from the 1860s titled “American Civil War Fantasy” by Jerry Bilik “The Black Horse Troop” by John Philip Sousa; “Stillwater” by Kelijah Dunton; “In Two Places” by Haley Woodrow; and a “Let Me Be Frank With You” by John Mackey.

General admission is $15; $10 for Shepherd faculty, staff, alumni, senior citizens, active-duty military, and those ages 18 and under; and free for Shepherd students with a valid Rambler ID. Tickets can be purchased in advance online.
