School of Music to present November 3 concert with Grammy Award-winning flutist

SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — The Shepherd University School of Music will present a special Salon Series concert event featuring Grammy Award-winning Native American flutist Mary Youngblood on Thursday, November 3, at 7:30 p.m. in the Frank Arts Center Theater.

Youngblood, who is half Seminole and half Aleut, is the first woman to professionally record the Native American flute.

Photo of Mary Youngblood playing the flute.She has been awarded three Native American Music Awards, being the first female artist to win Flutist of the Year, which she won in both 1999 and 2000, as well as winning Best Female Artist in 2000. She is also the first Native American woman to have received a Grammy Award for Best Native American Music Album and the first Native American woman to have won two Grammys, the first for “Beneath the Raven Moon” in 2002 and “Dance with the Wind” in 2006.

In 2007 Youngblood composed and played the flute music on the soundtrack for the documentary film “The Spirit of Sacajawea.”

General admission to the concert is $15; $10 for Shepherd faculty, staff, alumni, senior citizens, active-duty military, and those ages 18 and under; and free for Shepherd students with a valid Rambler ID. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the online ticket office.
