School of Music to host March 22 symphonic band concert

SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — The Shepherd University Symphonic Band, under the direction of Dr. Scott Hippensteel, will present “Folk Songs and Fairy Tales,” a fantastic musical journey of story and song in the Frank Arts Center Theater on Friday, March 22, at 7:30 p.m. A pre-concert lecture describing the works of the concert program will begin at 7 p.m.

Selections will include “Our Director,” a Fred Bigelow march; “English Folk Song Suite,” a suite of English folk songs set by Ralph Vaughan Williams; “Among the Clouds,” a fast-paced overture depicting the excitement of flying in one’s dreams by Brian Balmages; “Terpsichorean Dances,” a tribute to German composer Michael Praetorius featuring medieval folk songs by Jodie Blackshaw; “Perthshire Majesty,” a gentle yet powerful ballad depicting the Scottish countryside by Samuel Hazo; “Pipe and Thistle” by Carol Brittin Chambers; “Sunscapes,” a tribute to Florida by Chandler Wilson; and “Selections from Into the Woods,” an arrangement by Stephen Bulla of four songs from the famous musical by Stephen Sondheim.

The Shepherd University Symphonic Band provides quality large ensemble music-making experiences through the performance of significant wind band literature. Membership is open to all university students regardless of major, and auditions are not required. Additionally, faculty, staff, and community musicians participate in this truly all-campus “communiversity” band. The ensemble rehearses on Thursday evenings and performs during the spring semester.

General admission is $15; $10 for Shepherd faculty, staff, alumni, senior citizens, active-duty military, and ages 18 and under; and free for Shepherd students with a valid Rambler ID. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the online ticket office.
