School of Music to highlight new composers in March 28 concert

SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — The Shepherd University School of Music will present “New Music for String Quartet” on Thursday, March 28, in the Frank Arts Center W. H. Shipley Recital Hall, 260 University Dr., Shepherdstown, West Virginia. The concert, which is free and open to the public, will feature ten world premieres by nine student composers.

Shepherd faculty cellist Camilo Pérez-Mejía, violinist Heather Austin-Stone, second violinist Elena Ross, and violist Matthew Gattuso, will perform.

Composers will include music majors Xavier Hersom, Joshua Shupe, and Nathaniel Hylton, all of Martinsburg, West Virginia; Emily McMoran, Charles Town, West Virginia; Trey Davis, Inwood, West Virginia; Pheonix Poulin, Berkeley Springs, West Virginia; and Emily Ellmore, Big Pool, Maryland; secondary education major Ilana Snapp, Ranson, West Virginia; and Regents Bachelor of Arts major Dorian Hemerick, Gerrardstown, West Virginia.

The concert will feature an eclectic array of styles ranging from a singable waltz, to a piece based on a folk story, to a musical depiction of the timeless landscapes of the Southwest, to musical representations of grief, uncertainty, fiery motion, and everything in between.
