SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — The 18th annual Scarborough Society Gala took place August 9 at the Bavarian Inn, Shepherdstown, to support Shepherd University’s Scarborough Library. Inspired by the high-seas adventure “Treasure Island,” written by Robert Louis Stevenson, the black-tie event invited nearly 250 guests to a tropical Caribbean island to hunt buried treasure.

Presenting sponsors for the event were BB&T Wealth Management, represented by Marty and Marlyn Keesecker; Jefferson Security Bank, represented by Cindy and Steve Kitner; Valley Proteins, Inc., represented by Mike and Wendy Smith; United Bank, Inc., represented by Christopher and Samantha Colbert; and Bronfman Rothschild Wealth Advisors, represented by John Wolff and daughter Emma Wolff. Jerry Williams of State Farm Insurance sponsored the band, Souled Out, while Argos USA Corporation served as a program sponsor. Other community sponsors included Skinner Law Firm, Bowles Rice LLP, PriceRomine PLLC, Smith Elliott Kearns and Company, LLC, and Ours, Lawyer, and Lewis and Company. The Scarborough Society also gave special recognition to the Bavarian Inn for its hospitality and dedicated assistance with event production, Tom Neal for his artistic backdrop design, and Kevin Wilson of Magnolia Tree for centerpiece design.

“Over the past 18 years, we have been successful in raising more than $860,000 for the short-and long-term needs of the library—a large part of this coming from the gala,” said Ray Alvarez, Scarborough Society president. “This success is due to the very generous monetary support of some outstanding corporate citizens and several groups of volunteers who continue to delight us with their creativity and high energy.”

Among the guests supporting the Scarborough Library were table hosts from the regional community and their invited friends. The group was made up of university faculty, administrators, alumni, and community members, including Ray and Mary Alvarez, Jason Best and Sara Maene, Bill and Sue Blair, Chris and Jody Carter, Enrico and Denise Caruso, Christopher and Samantha Colbert, Ben and Danielle Deuell, Brent and Jennica Grubb, Daniel and Linda Hart, Mary J.C. Hendrix and Charles Craft, Jerry and Susanne Horner, Martin and Marlyn Keesecker, Harrison and Vicki Lanham, Jeremiah and Christen Leiter, Ralph Lorenzetti and Rosemarie Cannarella Lorenzetti, Al and Sara Lueck, Tony and Shelly Price, Mike and Wendy Smith, Jim and Mary Staley, Kevin Wilson, and John and Lisa Wolff.

The Scarborough Society, sponsored by the Shepherd University Foundation, serves to support and strengthen the Shepherd library system. Funds raised through annual membership dues and gala proceeds provide needed support for the enhancement of library collections, technological services, and community organizations such as the Shepherdstown Film Society and the Society for Creative Writing. Currently the Scarborough Society has more than 190 members, whose names are recognized on a special Wall of Honor in the library’s reading room.

Anyone interested in becoming a member of the Scarborough Society is encouraged to call the Shepherd University Foundation office at 304-876-5397.
