SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — The 2022-2023 Shepherd Music Salon Series, sponsored by Jefferson Security Bank, will present “Rhythm, Spice, and Everything Nice” on Thursday, October 6, at 7:30 p.m. in the Frank Arts Center W.H. Shipley Recital Hall. The concert is free and open to the public.

The concert will feature Shepherd University School of Music faculty members Andrea Diggs on flute, Bob Sykes on piano, Robin Rhodes on bass, and Kelton Norris on drums for a night of rhythmic flare as they play through the history of jazz flute, including works by Antônio Carlos Jobim and Astor Pantaleón Piazzolla.

“The flute has long been intertwined in jazz music,” Diggs said. “The impetus for inclusion, however, has not always been consistent. Separate parallel paths have led to the gradual acceptance of flute as being more than a side piece for saxophonists. Much of the inspiration comes from South America, which is reflected in the Latin rhythms you will hear throughout the concert. We will go beyond that, however, to show the versatility of the instrument in other styles of the jazz genre.”
