SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — The Shepherd University Department of Music Preparatory Division spring semester early childhood music classes will take place on Friday mornings from January 20 -March 31, with no class scheduled for March 3.
Musical Discoveries for children ages 18 months-3 years will take place from 9:15-10 a.m. and Music for Preschoolers for ages 3-5 will take place from 10-10:45 a.m. at the Frank Center. Each class is limited to 10 children and the cost is $120 for the 10-week sessions. Children taking the classes will experience songs and rhythm games and will be able to play acoustic and Orff instruments. The classes will be taught by Frauke Higgins, who has a master’s degree in music education and is an experienced early childhood music educator. Higgins has taught classes to young children since 1990.
According to the Music Teachers National Association, the many benefits of studying music include an enhancement of abstract reasoning skills, higher cognitive development test scores, and better eye-hand coordination and fine motor skills.
For more information about the classes, contact Sherry Sykes, preparatory program coordinator, at ssykes@shepherd.edu or 304-876-5248.
