SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — For the second year, Shepherd University’s Lifelong Learning program is offering a trip to Mendoza, Argentina. “Malbec and More: A Wine and Food Journey to Mendoza, Argentina” will take place February 9-19, 2016, and will feature private wine tastings, visits to wineries, a cooking class, and an excursion into the Andes mountains.
The trip is open to 12 travelers at a cost of $3,950 per person, double occupancy, including hotel and airfare. There will be a $700 single supplement fee.
The guide for the tour will be Shepherdstown’s Ellen Hoffman, the former co-owner of a Mendoza bed and breakfast and a wine tour company. Study Abroad Mendoza, a company that organizes study programs, will provide additional support.
John Sheely, of Martinsburg, went on the trip sponsored by the Lifelong Learning program this past February.
“It’s probably the best trip I’ve ever been on,” he said. “If you like wine, you better go. Everything was done as well as you could expect it to be done.”
Steve and Jill Schatken, of Shepherdstown, were also part of the February trip. They claimed the trip was great fun with great food.
“Ellen is a superlative guide,” Steve said. “Everyone should have this trip on their bucket list.”
Mendoza produces more than 70 percent of Argentine wines. Other agricultural products like tomatoes, garlic, melons, apples, and pears are also grown in the region. The tour will include special lunches and dinners that will include these products in traditional recipes, as well as modern ones created by chefs who have been attracted to Mendoza by the boom in the wine industry.
