SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Shepherd University’s George Tyler Moore Center (GTMC) for the Study of the Civil War is sponsoring a free Facebook Live discussion titled “Mosby’s Rangers” with author and historian Eric W. Buckland on Thursday, June 3, at 1 p.m.

Buckland is the author of several books on Mosby’s Rangers that explore not only the tactics employed by Mosby, but also the men who served in the 43rd Battalion Virginia Cavalry. This program will focus on the official formation of Mosby’s Rangers in June 1863 and events that unfolded as Mosby took part on the periphery of the Gettysburg campaign.

On April 28, 1862, the Confederate Congress approved an act allowing the organization of partisan rangers. These units operated independently from the main Confederate army, but were held accountable under regular army regulations and received the same pay and rations as their regular army counterparts. One of these units, arguably the most famous of the war, was organized in June 1863. Officially known as the 43rd Virginia Cavalry Battalion, these partisans became known as Mosby’s Rangers after their commander, Col. John S. Mosby.
