SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — The Shepherd University Department of Music’s Community Music Division announces the spring semester dates for the early childhood music classes for children 18 months-5 years, offering children experience learning songs, rhythm games, acoustic instruments, and Orff instruments.

The classes, which can be purchased as a gift for the holidays, will be taught by Frauke Higgins. They cost $140 each, will run for 10 weeks, and will take place in the Frank Center on Friday mornings from January 19-April 13, 2018. There will be no classes on February 2, March 9, and March 30. The two classes offered are Musical Discoveries for 18 months-3 years old, with caregiver, from 9:15-10 a.m., and Music for Preschoolers, for ages 3-5 with caregiver, from 10-10:45 a.m.

Higgins has been teaching early childhood music classes at Shepherd since 2004. Higgins was born and raised in Northern Germany. She began her music training in early childhood music and instrumental studies at the Conservatory in Trossingen, Germany, and continued with her studies at the Royal Academy of Music in Aarhus, Denmark, graduating with a master’s degree in music. Higgins taught in both Germany and Denmark before moving to the United States in 1990 and developing her own early childhood music program. Higgins has worked with young children for 25 years and said she loves the enthusiasm her young students bring to class.
