SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Shepherd University named Carrie L. Bodkins as the new University athletic director this week. Bodkins brings a wealth of experience in higher education and athletics to Shepherd, having worked as an AD, head coach, and NCAA compliance director.

Headshot of Carrie BodkinsBodkins began her career at Davis & Elkins College in Elkins, West Virginia, serving as head volleyball coach, senior woman administrator, and instructor of physical education. Most recently, Bodkins was the vice president for enrollment management and director of athletics at Alderson Broaddus University in Philippi, West Virginia where she spent 18 years.

Shepherd University President Dr. Mary J.C. Hendrix said Bodkins is an excellent choice for Shepherd.

“Carrie’s vision for athletics in an academic setting will enhance the experience of student-athletes, supporting their success during competition and in the classroom,” Hendrix said. “She has a rich history of working collaboratively with coaches, faculty, and staff towards a common goal of advancing a university’s mission. We are excited for her to join us!”

Bodkins said Shepherd’s community and physical campus are attractive, but that the tradition of athletic success is what drew her to apply for the position.

“I like the size of the campus, the family atmosphere, and the location of the campus,” Bodkins said. “Shepherd University athletics has unlimited potential for being successful in Division II and the PSAC. I am excited to build on the solid foundation we have at Shepherd University and anxious to catapult the department to the next level.”

Bodkins’s background includes extensive involvement with the NCAA. She served on the NCAA Division II Implementation Committee, the NCAA Division II Women’s Soccer Committee, the NCAA Division II Identity Sub-Committee, and served three years on the NCAA Volleyball Rules Committee.

Additionally, Bodkins earned Coach of the Year honors in the WVIAC and the G-MAC while coaching volleyball at Alderson Broaddus and compiled a .718 winning percentage in conference play.

Bodkins earned a Bachelor of Arts in social sciences from Alderson Broaddus, a Bachelor of Arts in education from Fairmont State University, and a master’s degree in sports management from West Virginia University.

Bodkins played volleyball and basketball when she was a student at Alderson Broaddus. She made First-Team Atlantic Region Selection and WVIAC Player of the Year in volleyball, was a 1,000 scorer in basketball, and was inducted into the Alderson Broaddus University Hall of Fame.
