String Orchestra Camp
Senior and Junior Levels Offered
June 19-23, 2023!
Senior String Camp-9:00 AM-4:30 PM
Junior String Camp-9:00 AM-12:00 PM
Students enrolled in grades 8-12 during the 2022-2023 academic year are invited to participate in the Senior String Orchestra Camp. Faculty include Dr. Scott Hippensteel, Heather Austin-Stone, Teresa Gordon, and Camilo Pérez-Mejía. Highlights of the camp include string orchestra rehearsals and a concert, individual and group coaching, chamber music and string quartets, master classes, and faculty performances. The Senior Camp will run from 9:00 am – 4:30 pm Monday June 19th to Friday June 23rd in the Frank Arts Center. There will be 2 final performances on Friday the 23rd. At 1:00 pm there will be a Chamber Music concert. at 2:00 pm there will be a String Orchestra Concert in the McCoy Rehearsal Hall in the Frank Arts Center.
Students in grades 3 – 7 are invited to register for the Junior String Orchestra Camp. The Junior Strings camp will run from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm Monday June 19th – Friday June 23rd. There will be a final concert on Friday the 23rd at 12:00 pm.
Auditions for Senior String Camp seating will take place on the first day of camp.*Advanced 6th and 7th graders may also audition for the Senior String Camp with prior approval from the camp faculty.
Please be prepared to perform:
- Any 2 major scales (3 octaves) up to 5 sharps and 3 flats
- Sight-reading

Summer Jazz Camp
Junior and Senior levels Offered

Highlights of the camp include jazz band rehearsals and a concert for both the Junior and Senior levels, individual and group coaching, combo/improvisation classes, theory classes, master classes, and faculty performances. Students enrolled in grades 6-12 during the 2022 – 2023 academic year are invited to participate. College students and jazz enthusiasts are also welcome!
The Senior Jazz camp will run from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm Monday June 19th – Friday June 23rd in the Frank Arts Center. There will be a final concert on Friday the 23rd at 2:00 pm in the McCoy Rehearsal Hall.

Summer Jazz Flute Institute
June 19-23, 2023!
9:00 AM-4:30 PM
This summer offering is for the serious flutist (all adult ages including college students and seasoned professionals) interested in expanding their versatility into the jazz realm. Students will have a private lesson, learn the basics of improvisation and jazz theory, how to read lead sheets, listen, transcribe, imitate, how to incorporate extended techniques into jazz playing, and how to improvise in traditional flute repertoire. They will also get to participate in jam sessions with Shepherd jazz faculty. The boarding option is available to students who are at least 18 years of age and have completed high school. Advanced High School students who submit a letter of recommendation written by a music teacher are welcome to attend as commuters.
Students must have at least two of the following prepared before arriving:
• Any Handel Sonata slow movement
• And Handel Sonata moderate or fast movement
• Any work or movement with a place for a performer-written cadenza
• Any Piazzolla Tango-Etude
• Danza de la Mariposa by Valerie Coleman
• Fish are Jumping by Robert Dick
Students Have at least two of the following melodies learned before arriving (all tunes are from the Real Book vol. I):
• Fly Me to the Moon by Bart Howard
• One Note Samba by Antônio Carlos Jobim/Newton Mendonça
• Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars (Corcovado) by Jobim/Gene Lees
• Take the A Train by Billy Strayhorn
• Satin Doll by Duke Ellington/Johnny Mercer/Billy Strayhorn
• Now’s the Time by Charlie Parker

Summer Woodwind Camp
June 26-30, 2023!
9:00 AM- 12:00 PM
This camp is for rising 7th-12th graders who play flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, and saxophone and have at least a year of experience in a school ensemble or private lessons. June 26th-June 30th, 9 am to noon in the Frank Arts Center. We will have a full-group and chamber ensembles, as well as master classes and a performance.
