College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences
Welcome! Our college houses diverse, dynamic faculty and programs designed to prepare you to pursue fulfilling careers that excite you today, while fostering the skills to adapt to the careers and passions for the future not yet within your sights. A college degree with a liberal arts core can open doors to your fields of interest, foster a wider world perspective, and build skills applicable in many fields you haven’t imagined yet. According to a 2016 report by the World Economic Forum, “By one popular estimate, 65% of children entering primary school today will ultimately end up working in completely new job types that don’t yet exist.” Even old jobs will look radically different in workplaces transformed by technology, changing demographics, and globalization.
This is the beautiful secret of a liberal arts degree that many people realize after college. My friends include visual artists, writers, educators, and internationally-recognized performers, conductors, and composers. Other close friends include a pianist who earned a bachelor’s degree in music who is now an eye surgeon, an operatic soprano who is a lawyer in Washington, DC, and a brilliant mezzo-soprano who is Wolf Trap Opera’s Vice President. My best friend from high school holds a bachelor’s degree in theater and is a successful entrepreneur with his own national communications company. All would say that their liberal arts experiences gave them skills to prepare them to do what they loved, and to pursue the future passions they couldn’t see when they were in college.
In a 2013 survey taken by the Association of American Colleges and Universities, of over 318 employers, nearly 93% of all those surveyed stated that “a demonstrated capacity to think critically, communicate clearly, and solve complex problems is more important than [a candidate’s] undergraduate major.” Shepherd’s liberal arts core is designed to build these skills, to help learners form perspectives across disciplines, and to see a bigger picture.
At Shepherd, our faculty are dedicated to scholarship, research, creativity, and—most importantly—to you. They love teaching and sharing their vast knowledge. They offer an amazing variety of learning opportunities—honors classes, interdisciplinary studies, independent study, internships, service learning, and capstones—in every major. Through your classes and study abroad opportunities you can experience the world and expand what you’ve already learned.
I invite you to explore our programs and learn about our faculty and departments. We are dedicated to your education and your personal transformation. You are most welcome here.
