Who We Are
Shepherd University’s mission as a public liberal arts university embraces a diverse community of learners, with Shepherd as a gateway to the world of opportunities and ideas. Our core values of learning, engagement, integrity, accessibility and community shape our students’ educational experience and prepare our students to be contributing citizens globally, in their communities and professions.
Academic Affairs Vision
The academic enterprise at Shepherd University will be innovative, dynamic, responsive, and committed to a high-quality education experience, coupled with a responsibility to promoting scholarship and service through an engaged community of students, faculty, and staff.
Academic Affairs Mission
Embracing the core values of the University, Academic Affairs administers and coordinates educational opportunities for our students through an array of undergraduate and select graduate degree programs, as well as ongoing training through certificate and continuing education programs. Shepherd University’s academic offerings provide opportunities for students, faculty, and staff to engage and understand their responsibilities as leaders, innovators, and model citizens in a rapidly changing world.
We value and understand the essential components of inclusion, diversity, and academic excellence as we seek to respond, engage with and improve our local, regional, national, and global communities.
Shepherd is a member of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges (COPLAC). COPLAC’s mission is to identify and support high quality public liberal arts and sciences institutions. This is an honor reserved for one institution per state and represents our University’s focus on outstanding learning outcomes associated with a liberal arts education; opportunities for student and faculty interaction; a critical mass of students in a residential environment; student participation in co-curricular activities, as well as a clear commitment to cultural diversity.
Our updated Civility Code restates our commitment to “treating everyone with fairness, kindness, and civility by upholding meaningful values that are linked to academic inquiry and knowledge.” We value the contribution of all members of our community.
At Shepherd, we seek to distinguish ourselves through innovative education and memorable student experiences. We are committed to enhancing the academic brand of the university through supporting, recognizing, and celebrating the scholarship and creative endeavors of students, faculty and staff both inside and outside the classroom. We have a strong commitment to civic engagement and experiential learning through internships and co-ops. These important opportunities provide practical experience as students transition from courses into careers.
