SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — The 2022-2023 Shepherd University School of Music Salon Series, sponsored by Jefferson Security Bank, continues Thursday, February 16, at 7:30 p.m. with “Paris, Berlin, and Beyond” in the Frank Arts Center W.H. Shipley Recital Hall. The concert is free and open to the public.

Baritone Robert Tudor and pianist Erica Rumbley will present a program featuring music sung in the salons of Europe, including Berlin and Paris, in the late-19th and early-20th centuries. They will perform compositions by Richard Strauss, Maurice Ravel, and Ralph Vaughan Williams.

During the recital, the audience will learn about Richard Strauss, his father forbidding him to follow the music of his contemporaries, and Strauss’s breakout compositions that made history. They will hear about Maurice Ravel competing to have his music featured in a film about Don Quixote. The recital will conclude with the evocative and stirring song cycle by Ralph Vaughan Williams, “The House of Life,” a cycle of six sonnets.

The concert will also explore facets of profound love and loss through the poetry and paintings of Dante Gabriel Rossetti. In this unique performance, Tudor will weave stories about the composers and their music throughout the recital and project art of that period related to the poetry.
