What is TRIO Student Support Services?

TRIO Student Support Services (TRIO/SSS) is a federally-funded grant program that offers assistance to help students succeed in college. The three program goals are to help students stay in school, to increase their grade point averages and to graduate from college. Some of the services provided include free tutoring, academic advising, financial and economic literacy, assistance with applying for graduate school, educational/cultural activities, educational workshops, and career counseling.

The Shepherd University TRIO Student Support Services (TRIO/SSS) program was established by the United States Department of Education to increase the college retention and graduation rates of its participants who meet income guidelines established by the United States Department of Education, are first-generation student (neither parent has a bachelor’s degree) and/or students with a documented disability.

Why should I join?

TRIO/SSS provides a supportive community throughout the undergraduate journey.

By being a part of the program you will have access to resources such as knowledgeable professionals who will help you to acquire the skills necessary to succeed in college.

Our program offers academic tutoring and skill building, personal assistance and academic advising in post-secondary course selection, information on financial aid programs and financial literacy, resources for locating scholarships, participation in a peer mentoring program, participation in a TRIO Living/Learning Community and assistance in applying to graduate and professional programs.

How much does TRIO/SSS cost to join?

All program services are free. This program is completely funded by the U.S. Department of Education and Shepherd University.

Who is eligible for TRIO/SSS?

Shepherd TRIO/SSS is devoted to helping our students succeed; however, success is not possible without commitment from our students.

What classes will I have to take?

TRIO/SSS requires program participants to enroll in FYEX 102 for TRIO students your first year at Shepherd, as well as the classes required by your major.

How often will I need to meet with my TRIO/SSS Academic Retention Specialist?

Program guidelines state that a student must meet with their Academic Retention Specialist a minimum of three times per semester, although you are encouraged to meet with them as often as needed. Additionally, participants must attend at least three TRIO activities each semester.
