SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Shepherd University’s Common Reading program has selected this year’s winners of the annual essay contest based on the common reading book “Walking to Listen” by Andrew Forsthoefel. For the first time, the program sponsored an essay contest for community members as well as Shepherd students.

The student winner is Carter Warhurst, an English major from Harpers Ferry, for his essay “He’s Sure Walkin.” Warhurst will receive a $350 gift certificate to the Shepherd University Bookstore to purchase of textbooks.

The community winner is Susan April for her essay “Another Turn.” April won a $200 gift certificate to Four Seasons Books and is donating the full award to a local homeschool group, The Little Run Acres Pod, to buy new books for students.

The Common Reading program is sponsored by the Shepherd University Foundation. The 2021-2022 common reading book will be Harriet Tubman: The Road to Freedom,” a biography by Catherine Clinton.
