SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Shepherd University’s Phaze 2 Gallery will host an exhibit by sculptor Jason Hackett titled “Drift” March 1-30. A virtual artist talk is scheduled for Tuesday, March 16, at 5 p.m. To access the Zoom link for the lecture, visit https://www.shepherd.edu/art/phaze-2-gallery.

In his artist statement, Hackett says the exhibit is inspired by a stay two years ago in a cabin along the Roanoke River where he observed earthen mineral deposits along the riverbank in colors of brown, red, tan, and white, as well as various sizes of tree parts that informed the work in this show.

Hackett is assistant professor and studio manager for the Department of Craft/Material Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University. His work has been exhibited nationally in museums and galleries, including at Alexandria Museum of Art, San Angelo Museum of Fine Art, Mobile Museum of Art, Kennedy Museum of Art, Taubman Museum of Art, Arrowmont School of Art and Craft, Craft Alliance Center for Art and Design, and Peter’s Valley School of Craft, and internationally at The City Museum of Aviero in Portugal. Hackett is also the recipient of an Exploratory Grant from Virginia Commonwealth University allowing his research to include the 3-dimensional printing of clay, and a Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Professional Fellowship for his collaged ceramic works relating to the field of craft.

Phaze 2 Gallery operations have been modified to ensure the safety of visitors and gallery attendants. Limited daily hours in which attendants will be on hand to monitor the flow of traffic and maintain safe distancing and mask usage while in the gallery space are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 2-4 p.m. or by appointment. For more information, contact Evan Boggess, gallery director, at eboggess@shepherd.edu.
