SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Daisy Bautista, a junior recreation and leisure studies major from Riverdale, Maryland, and participant in Shepherd University’s TRiO Student Support Services program, was awarded the 2019 Mid-Eastern Association of Educational Opportunity Program Personnel (MEAEOPP) Scholarship and a 2019 West Virginia TRiO Scholarship.
“I’m really happy, especially getting two at the same time, because it’s pretty competitive among other TRiO students,” said Bautista, who has been an active member of TRiO Student Support Services since her freshman year.
MEAEOPP awards $1,000 scholarships to the top 10 students from all TRiO programs in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia. The West Virginia TRiO Association awards two $500 scholarships to postsecondary TRiO program participants within the state of West Virginia each year. Bautista was awarded these scholarships based on outstanding academic achievement as well as involvement on campus as a student leader and in the community.
MEAEOPP is a regional association for educational opportunity personnel from Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia with a mission of bringing together individuals who have shared interests in and advocate for the educational and cultural development of TRiO and all underrepresented and underserved individuals.
The goal of Shepherd’s TRiO Student Support Services is to increase the college retention and graduation rates of its participants by providing opportunities for academic development, assisting students with basic college requirements, and motivating them toward the successful completion of their postsecondary education.
