SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Four area students are the winners of this year’s Shepherd University open mathematics contest. This is the 11th year Shepherd’s Department of Computer Sciences, Mathematics, and Engineering has sponsored the competition, which encourages high school students to solve mathematical problems.
First prize of $250 went to Thanh-Phuong Tran of Urbana High School in Urbana, Maryland; a $150 second prize went to Will Grannis from The Heights School in Potomac, Maryland; homeschooled student Douglas Flynn of Libertytown, Maryland, and Chris Pondoc from Frederick (Maryland) High School each received honorable mention and $50 prizes.
Teachers who were recognized were Derise Danch of Urbana High School, Michael Hernández and Davis Maxham of The Heights School, homeschool teacher Karena Michelle Flynn of Libertytown, Maryland, and Karine Ptak from Frederick High School. Shepherd also issued a certificate of merit to Urbana High School, of Ijamsville, Maryland, and to Derise Danch, one of the mathematics faculty there, for entering three students in the contest.
“We congratulate all participating students and their teachers,” said Dr. Nicholas Martin, professor of mathematics and organizer of the competition.
