SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — The Scarborough Society of Shepherd University will sponsor a program featuring local Civil War author and historian Robert J. O’Connor on Wednesday, October 16 at 7 p.m. in the Scarborough Library Reading Room as part of its free lecture series.

O’Connor will discuss his novel, “The Return of Catesby,” which tells the tale of a former slave who gained his freedom and became the first African American teacher at Storer College, where he educated and encouraged newly freed slaves in a post-Civil War society.

The Illinois native and Northern Illinois University graduate began writing after retiring from a longtime tourism career. He resides in Charles Town and has written eight fiction and non-fiction books about the Civil War.

The Scarborough Society is a Friends of the Library organization sponsored by the Shepherd University Foundation. Annual membership dues help support library acquisitions, technology, and programs. Membership is open to all.

The program is free and open to the public. A reception will follow the lecture.
