College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences Home

Welcome! The College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences houses diverse, dynamic faculty and programs designed to prepare you to pursue fulfilling careers that excite you today, while fostering the skills to adapt to the careers and passions for the future not yet within your sights. According to a 2016 report by the World Economic Forum, “By one popular estimate, 65% of children entering primary school today will ultimately end up working in completely new job types that don’t yet exist.” Even old jobs will look radically different in workplaces transformed by technology, changing demographics, and globalization. The values of flexibility and cross-disciplinary associations that a liberal arts education provides is often appreciated most after college.

In a 2013 survey taken by the Association of American Colleges and Universities, of over 318 employers, nearly 93% of all those surveyed stated that “a demonstrated capacity to think critically, communicate clearly, and solve complex problems is more important than [a candidate’s] undergraduate major.”  Shepherd’s liberal arts core is designed to build these skills, to help learners form perspectives across disciplines, and to see a bigger picture.
