SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — U.S. Representative Riley Moore and his wife, Shepherd University Board of Governors member Guillermina “Mina” Garcia Moore, visited Shepherd University’s Center of Excellence for Photobiomodulation (PBM) on October 16 to learn about the University’s pioneering research in light-based therapies and its growing role in wellness innovation.
The visit was hosted by Shepherd University President Dr. Mary J.C. Hendrix and Dr. Jenny Flora, executive director of the Suzanne Shipley Wellness Center and Entrepreneurial Initiatives, and offered the congressman an inside look at Shepherd’s expanding research and the growing clinical potential of PBM.
Representative Moore toured the state-of-the-art PBM treatment rooms, spoke with University leaders about the latest advances in PBM technology, and learned about Shepherd’s ongoing efforts to secure competitive research funding.
Dr. Flora outlined Shepherd’s integration of PBM into academic, research, and community wellness initiatives, highlighting the university’s unique role as both a regional wellness hub and an emerging leader for applied PBM research. Shepherd is currently assessing PBM as an intervention for opioid addiction disorder and symptoms of depression, COVID-19-related brain fog, and sleep quality and muscle recovery in athletes.
The Center of Excellence for Photobiomodulation operates within Shepherd University’s Suzanne Shipley Wellness Center, which provides integrative wellness programming and advances the university’s strategic commitment to excellence, innovation, and opportunity.
