SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Three Shepherd University students presented papers as part of Hood College’s fifth annual undergraduate and graduate “Discovering the Humanities Conference” on Saturday, September 19.

Tanner Boeckmann, a secondary education major from Martinsburg, presented his essay titled “An Exploration of Gender Bias in Criticisms of Toni Morrison’s Work,” which he wrote for a spring 2021 seminar taught by Dr. Tim Nixon, professor of English, on the novels of Toni Morrison. Lee DiFante, a secondary education major from Martinsburg, presented the essay “Queer Representation and the Zeitgeist,” which was written for Nixon’s spring 2021 seminar in Greek mythology, and Isabella Sager, an English major from Harpers Ferry, presented her essay “Odysseus as the Anti-War Figure: Disguise, Manipulation, and PTSD in Homer’s Odyssey,” which she wrote for Nixon’s Greek mythology class.

The conference was open to any current undergraduate and graduate students who wanted to submit a seminar paper, departmental honors paper, research project, or thesis produced for any humanities-related course in art and archaeology, English, global languages and cultures, history, music, philosophy, religion, or any other humanities program unique to your institution. The conference this year was conducted virtually for safety precautions.
