CHARLES TOWN, WV — Jefferson County Schools and Shepherd University are excited to announce a new phase of their partnership that will provide direct admission for Jefferson High School and Washington High School students to Shepherd University, eliminating the need for a traditional application. This initiative marks a significant step in supporting local students as they plan for their future education and career paths.
This agreement will automatically admit students graduating from Jefferson County’s two high schools with a 2.5 GPA to Shepherd University. This direct admission pathway removes a common barrier for students and ensures they have a seamless transition to higher education.
Dr. Chuck Bishop, Superintendent of Jefferson County Schools, expressed enthusiasm about this new opportunity: “By removing the application process and fees, we are simplifying what can often be an overwhelming step for students and their families. This partnership reinforces our commitment to ensuring every student has the support and opportunity to tackle what comes next.”
Shepherd University President Dr. Mary J.C. Hendrix also highlighted the significance of this initiative: “Shepherd University is proud to strengthen our long-standing partnership with Jefferson County Schools. This direct admission program aligns with our mission of providing accessible, high-quality education to students in our community. We look forward to welcoming more Jefferson County graduates to our university and supporting them in achieving their academic and career goals.”
Shepherd University Provost Dr. Jack DeRochi and Associate Vice President for Enrollment Management Will Bell joined Washington High School Principal Donald Showen on October 24 to celebrate the first nine students to be admitted through the partnership.
Those students are Austin Brown, Rebecca Cline, Peyton Cunningham, Sven Dupree, Morgan Keysor, Amber Lo, Miana Longerbeam, Laiken McGinnis, and Brissia Sanchez.
This initiative builds upon years of collaboration between Shepherd University and Jefferson County Schools, emphasizing the shared commitment to student success. With this new direct admission pathway, students will have greater opportunities to pursue higher education close to home, with the resources and support they need to thrive.
Students and families are encouraged to contact their school counselors or visit Shepherd University’s admissions website at www.shepherd.edu/apply for more information about this partnership.
