SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Shepherd University is partnering with Delta Sigma Theta, Inc., the Contemporary American Theater Festival, Hood College, and Shenandoah University to present “Invisible Systems: My Experience with Privilege and Racism through Story and Song,” a virtual event exploring discrimination in various aspects of society.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place Thursday, March 3, from 6-8:30 p.m. via Zoom. It will include viewing the “Invisible Systems” documentary, which uses original songs, personal stories, dialogue, and visuals to explore the author’s experience of her societal position, advantages, and realizations about personal and systemic racism. After participants view the documentary, they will take part in community dialogue sessions followed by a brief panel discussion about the impact systems of discrimination in politics, theater, and the arts have among people from various racial and ethnic backgrounds.

Panelists will conclude the evening by interconnecting the ideas presented during the community dialogue sessions. Panelists will include Dr. Chiquita Howard-Bostic, Shepherd University associate vice president of diversity, equity, and inclusivity; Dr. Hakeem Leonard, Shenandoah University assistant provost for inclusion, diversity, and equity; Dr. Terry Ann Scott, Hood College assistant professor of history; and Dr. Lorenda Chisolm, assistant superintendent of teaching and learning, Schenectady City School District, New York.

The Zoom link for this event is available on the Office of Diversity and Equity current initiatives webpage.
