SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — The Shepherd University Department of Music will present a concert featuring the work of student composers on Monday, November 30, at 7 p.m. in the Frank Center’s McCoy Rehearsal Hall. The recital will highlight a variety of completed works and works in progress by composers in Shepherd’s music department. Students whose compositions will be performed are Anthony Farris, New Creek; Allison Hollis, Frederick, Maryland; James Townsend, Romney; and Walker Williams, Berkeley Springs.
Works composed by Anthony Farris that will be performed include “Three Sutras for Flute Quartet: III, The fool, who fell in love with his guardian angel,” performed by Katie Houle, Melissa McKay, Kia Jones, and Rachel Termohlen; “Do Geese See God,” performed by bassoonist Ryan McClure; and “The First Section of an Unfinished Wind Quintet,” performed by Melissa McKay on flute, Walker Williams on oboe, Ashleigh Stottlemyer on horn, Samantha Vaughn on bass clarinet, and Ryan McClure on bassoon.
Other compositions that will be performed are “The Night is Darkening ‘Round Me” by Allison Hollis, featuring mezzo-soprano Hannah Wardell, and Taylor Kirschling on bass clarinet; “Concerto for Audience” by Walker Williams; “The Tao is a River” by James Townsend, featuring the composer on piano and electronics; “O Magnum Mysterium” by Walker Williams, a work for choir conducted by Greg Shook, adjunct music professor, with singers Sam Bower, Jordan Bushong-Taylor, Kevin Grega, Grace Guiney, Ryan McClure, Andrew Oswinkle, Tamira Patterson, Ashley Probst, Ron Rowlett, Mary Sullivan, Walker Williams, and Madeline Zayas.
