SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Shepherd University faculty, staff, alumni, students, and community members gathered to honor President Dr. Mary J.C. Hendrix at a reception on Tuesday, May 5 in the University’s Wellness Center Atrium.
The event offered the University community an opportunity to recognize Hendrix ahead of her retirement this summer, marking a decade of service to Shepherd. Approximately 200 attendees celebrated her leadership and impact on the institution and the state of West Virginia.
U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) delivered remarks recognizing Hendrix’s tenure and her role in advancing the University.
“Dr. Mary Hendrix’s leadership has left a lasting impact on Shepherd University and the state of West Virginia,” Capito said. “Over the past decade, she has guided transformative improvements across campus, and her commitment to Shepherd’s mission and to the success of its students will be remembered for years to come.”
During her presidency, Hendrix oversaw significant campus enhancements, including major renovations, expanded residential and dining facilities, upgraded classroom technology, and the establishment of new academic centers and institutes. A Shepherdstown native and Shepherd University alumna, she has emphasized collaboration, student success, and community engagement throughout her tenure.
In her remarks, Hendrix expressed gratitude to the campus community, state and federal leaders, and those who supported the University’s growth.
“It has been the honor of a lifetime to serve as your president,” Hendrix said. “As I step away, I do so with immense confidence in the future of the University. The challenges ahead are real, but so are the opportunities, and I have no doubt that this community will continue to adapt, innovate, and lead with courage and conviction.”
Additional speakers included past and present University leaders, board members, and community partners, who reflected on Hendrix’s leadership and the progress achieved during her presidency.
Among them was Jefferson County Administrator Edwina Benites, who presented a resolution to designate May 5, 2026 as Mary J.C. Hendrix Day in Jefferson County.
President Hendrix will retire in June, concluding nearly 10 years of service to Shepherd University and a career dedicated to public higher education.
