SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Shepherd University’s George Tyler Moore Center for the Study of the Civil War (GTM Center) is hosting two events in early December.
On Friday, December 1, at 7 p.m. at the GTM Center, 136 W. German St., Shepherdstown, West Virginia, James Scythes, assistant professor of history at West Chester University, will present a lecture based on the book “Letters to Lizzie: The Story of Sixteen Men in the Civil War and the One Woman Who Connected Them All.” The event is free and open to the public. To RSVP, call 304-876-5429 or email gtmcweb@shepherd.edu.
Scythes edited a collection of letters exchanged between 16 Civil War soldiers and one young woman, Lizzie Brick. Since Lizzie herself could not bear arms, she took up her pen, and through ongoing correspondence, helped these Union soldiers sustain their motivation for the cause. The book contains 124 letters that connected men to their homes and offers insight into the war’s impact on the common soldier.
The GTM Center will also host a “Historic Christmas” on Saturday, December 2, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. This free, family-friendly event will feature yule logs, living history demonstrations, children’s activities, battlefield tabletop games, and a display by the Shepherdstown Battlefield Preservation Association.
