SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Shepherd University’s Department of Sociology, Criminology, and Criminal Justice and the Blue Ridge Community and Technical College’s Department of Criminal Justice will host a virtual panel with the Jefferson County Emergency Services Agency led by Capt. Craig Horn, education and compliance officer, discussing EMS and firefighting opportunities.
The discussion, part of the In Pursuit of Justice: Applied Criminal Justice Presentation Series, will take place Thursday, April 1, at 7 p.m. via Zoom and is free and open to the public. The panel will also discuss how Jefferson County EMS works with other agencies to achieve successful outcomes in investigations. Those interested in a career in arson, death, and forensic investigations will learn how volunteering or working for a local fire/EMS agency can propel a future career.
Horn, a Jefferson County native, began in the fire service as a volunteer with Friendship Fire Company, where he served in several roles including assistant ambulance chief. Horn’s EMS Olympics team won multiple awards, including the state BLS first place award in 1996. Horn was recognized as Region 8/9 Top EMT and Top Rescuer in 1998. He has held several positions as a Nationally Registered Paramedic and served in various occupational safety roles in healthcare systems.
As the program director for the West Virginia Office of Emergency Medical Services technical services network, Region 8/9, Horn has developed an understanding of EMS systems and a network of career, volunteer, and governmental contacts throughout the state. He was the fire science and safety program coordinator at Shepherd and an instructor and academic advisor in fire science, safety, and EMS courses. Horn is appointed by the Governor as a member of the West Virginia EMS Advisory Council and serves as the president of the North Eastern Regional EMS Association.
