SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Shepherd University is hosting its 13th annual Aging Well Workshop, “Holistic Approaches to Aging Well: The Mind-body Connection,” on Tuesday, May 10, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. in the Robert C. Byrd Center for Congressional History and Education auditorium and virtually via Zoom.
Six continuing education credits (CEU) are available for nurses and social workers for a $25 fee. There is no CEU charge for employees of the West Virginia Bureau of Senior Services and the workshop is free for all other participants. Online registration is available until May 6 on the Aging Well Workshop website. Panera Bread boxed lunches, including a vegetarian option, are available for in-person attendees for an additional charge of $15.
This year’s workshop will focus on aging and the mind-body connection, which participants will explore through a panel discussion, breakout sessions, and a keynote address. Topics covered will include wellness and caregiving during the COVID-19 pandemic, integrative medicine, nutrition, social isolation and the importance of community, cultural humility, and the science of aging well. Two interactive mindfulness moments will also be presented.
Dr. Bernard Schreurs, professor of neuroscience and director of the West Virginia Alzheimer’s Disease Registry, will give the keynote address titled “What Science Can Teach Us about Aging Well.”
Presenters will be Dr. Sandra Crewe, dean, and professor of social work at Howard University; Dr. Arnetta Fletcher, assistant professor, and Nutrition Program director at Shepherd; and Dr. Tracy Johnston, primary care physician with the Center for Integrative Medicine in Winchester, Virginia.
The Aging Well Workshop is presented by the School of Nursing, Departments of Psychology and Social Work, and Lifelong Learning Program at Shepherd and funded by the West Virginia Bureau of Senior Services.
