The Accuplacer Exam (English/Math)
What is the Accuplacer, and who needs Accuplacer scores?
The Accuplacer exam assesses skill levels in reading, writing and math to determine a student’s appropriate course placement. All new incoming students must have a placement score in math and/or English before registering for their first semester of classes Students without ACT/SAT scores or those who have not completed college‑level English or math must take the Accuplacer exam for placement.
Why placement matters:
Placement scores help us understand the skills you’re bringing into college so academic advisors can place you in courses that match your current level. These scores ensures you start in classes where you can be successful, avoid registering for courses that may not be the right fit, and stay on the most efficient path toward graduation. Students who have taken the ACT or SAT but believe that their test scores do not reflect their ability in math and/or English may also elect to take the exam.
Shepherd University offers in-person Accuplacer testing throughout the spring and summer to support new students as they prepare for advising and class registration.
