SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Shepherd University welcomed students, alumni, and career professionals to the Student Center on Wednesday, February 11 for its annual Professional Connections Day, a conference-style event designed to prepare students for life and careers after graduation.

Hosted by the Office of Career Services in partnership with Alumni Affairs, Professional Connections Day gives students the opportunity to engage with Shepherd alumni and industry professionals through panel discussions, informal networking, and breakout sessions on a variety of career-related topics.

“Professional Connections Day is about more than networking. It’s about helping students see what’s possible,” said Andrew Shultz, director of Career Services. “When students connect with alumni and professionals, they gain confidence, clarity, and real-world perspective that can shape their career path. Our goal is to make those connections early and often so that every Shepherd student feels prepared for life after graduation.”

The event kicked off with a luncheon and keynote address by Dawn Crawley, owner of STW Cleaning, who spoke on “The Power of Networking.” The luncheon and program were sponsored by the Shepherd University Rotaract Club with support from the Shepherd University Foundation.

Following the luncheon, students participated in breakout sessions led by Shepherd alumni. Topics included leadership and management, transitioning from student-athlete to the workforce, LinkedIn best practices, volunteerism and professional development, personal finance, and strategies for early career success. Alumni presenters also shared their professional journeys and offered practical advice on internships, first jobs, and long-term career paths.

“Our alumni are one of Shepherd’s greatest strengths,” said Katie Swayne, director of Alumni Affairs. “Through Professional Connections Day, we’re building meaningful relationships between students and alumni and ensuring our students have the networks and support they’ll need long after they leave campus.”

The event also included the popular Dress for Success Fashion Show, where student volunteers modeled professional attire and demonstrated how to make a confident first impression in interviews and workplace settings.

Professional Connections Day is one of several initiatives designed to connect Shepherd students with alumni mentors and regional employers.
